The North Carolina Board of Transport allowed 14-foot-wide residences on the state's roadways, but until January 1997, 16-foot-wide homes were not allowed. 41 states enabled 16-foot-side homes, but they were not offered in North Carolina. Under a test program authorized January 10, 1997, the larger homes could be supplied on specific roadways at particular times of day and travel 10 mph below the rate limitation, with companion automobiles in front as well as behind. At some point, all residences had to leave the state on interstate highways. Mobile homes are available in 2 major sizes, single-wides and also double-wides.
